Milano report 2017

15/05/2017

Each year the world’s leading furniture design companies display their prototypes and showcase pieces to the world at Salone del Mobile, the world’s largest furniture and design show. And every year we travel to Milano to see for ourselves the latest releases and order new displays for the showroom, returning with a fresh approach to what we can offer our discerning clients here in NZ.

The direction for this year was a mature, calm and timeless design that reflects a wish to relax - concentrating on quality and significant detailing. The palatte included warm burgundy hues, rich greens, luxurious marbles and woven leathers. Metals still feature heavily and included black chrome, glossy champagne and burnished bronze. The timber finishes on offer ranged from the warm tones of Italian Walnut through to Smoked Oaks and Black Elm.

The highlights this year, without a doubt, were Poliform and Flexform – both manufacturers having doubled their stands from previous years. You can’t underestimate the incredible investment in these displays - giant walls clad in marble, internal courtyards lushly planted and not to forget the new furniture designs showcased. Each new piece represents hundreds of hours of research and development and careful liaison between the architect and manufacturer. The collaboration between designer and manufacturer further cements their position on the design landscape – Flexform’s co-lab with Antonio Citterio and Carlo Colombo and Poliform’s with Emmanuel Gallina, Jean-Marie Massaud, Rodolfo Dordoni and Marcel Wanders.
