1919 armchair

DEsigned Renzo Frau

Seasoned beech support structure. Seat, backrest and armrests sprung by means of hand-tied double cone steel springs resting on jute belts. Seat padding is in rubberised horsehair; the backrest and armrests are in hand-shaped vegetable horsehair. The seat cushion is in goose down. The backrest design is obtained by manual capitonné working. A row of leather-upholstered nails further embellishes the back. The plate-holder is in wax-treated Canaletto walnut.
The ‘1919’ armchair, named after the year in which it was designed, is actually archived under the code ‘128’. Although allegedly designed for a specific person, Filiberto Ludovico of Savoy, Duke of Pistoia, it was to become one of the first great public successes. A re-interpretation of the classic Bergere model, the ‘1919’ adds to its forefathers, with the strength of its characteristics capitonné working used on the backrest. A complementary little arm comes as an optional accessory designed to hold the Dukes ashtray, as he was a famous cigar smoker.
