Eero Saarinen designed the groundbreaking Womb Chair at Florence Knoll's request for "a chair that was like a basket full of pillows, something I could really curl up in." Introduced in 1948, his answer — a sculpted shell wrapped in soft upholstery, floating on a slim polished frame — became one of the most loved chairs of the twentieth century, and it remains in continuous production by Knoll to this day.

This is the authentic Womb Chair, made by Knoll to Saarinen's original specifications and carrying the KnollStudio logo and Eero Saarinen's signature. Each chair is made to order in your choice of Knoll upholstery, with the matching ottoman available to complete it.

Eero Saarinen

Born to world famous parents, architect and Cranbrook Academy of Art director Eliel Saarinen and textile artist Loja Saarinen, Eero Saarinen was surrounded by design his whole life. It came as no surprise that Eero was helping his father design furniture and fixtures for the Cranbrook campus by the time he was in his teens. In 1929 Eero left for Paris where he studied sculpture before enrolling in the Yale architecture program the following year. In 1934, he returned to Michigan to teach at Cranbrook, work on furniture designs, and practice architecture with his father.

It was at Cranbrook that Saarinen met Charles Eames. The two young men, both committed to the exploration of potential new materials and processes, quickly became great friends, pushing each other creatively while collaborating on several projects. The most notable outcome of their partnership was the groundbreaking collection of molded plywood chairs for the MoMA-sponsored 1940 Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition. Their collection was awarded first prize in all categories, catapulting the young designers to the forefront of the American modern furniture movement.

Founded in New York in 1938 by Hans Knoll, the company was shaped from 1943 onward by Florence Knoll, an architect and designer in her own right, who built Knoll's now-legendary partnerships with the era's leading modernists.

It's through Knoll that pieces like Eero Saarinen’s Womb and Tulip chairs, Harry Bertoia’s wire chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair and Warren Platner's intricate wire collection became modern design icons, alongside Marcel Breuer's Wassily and Cesca designs, which joined the collection through Knoll's 1968 acquisition of Gavina. These aren't reissues: they're the genuine article, still made to the same exacting standard today, ready to anchor a considered home rather than sit behind a museum rope.
